From Vulnerable to Victorious – Lucy’s Story of Resilience

My name is Lucy, a resilient fifteen-year-old student at Kantare Secondary School in Rukiga District, I am a testament to the impact of JMERC’s Girls and Youth Empowerment Programme.

My life took a challenging turn one day when I went to a local shop to buy milk, only to encounter a misunderstanding that spiralled into a severe accusation. The shopkeeper’s wife, fuelled by a personal conflict, accused me of having an affair with her husband. My stepmother, without seeking the truth, allowed the woman to confront me, leaving me defenceless and alone.

Seeking refuge, I turned to a trusted adult friend who provided me shelter for three days. During this time, I learned that the shopkeeper had been falsely imprisoned on charges of defilement, a situation amplified by my stepmother’s greed and willingness to exploit the incident for monetary gain.

Faced with this injustice, the values from JMERC’s trainings came to the forefront. The programme had instilled in me a strong sense of self-esteem and the ability to make informed, courageous decisions. With unwavering determination, I went to the police station to defend the innocent shopkeeper. Despite my stepmother’s attempts to manipulate the situation, the truthfulness and confidence led to the shopkeeper’s release, showcasing the strength of character I had developed through JMERC’s initiatives.

My return home was met with hostility and rejection from my family. My stepmother’s bitterness and the subsequent family alienation forced me to seek solace elsewhere. Eventually, I found a haven with my grandmother, with the support of an uncle who took on the responsibility of my education.

Despite these personal hardships, my spirit remained unbroken. I continued with my education at Kantare Secondary School, a testament to my resilience and the empowering influence of JMERC. I credit the programme for giving me the courage to stand up for myself and others, and for enabling me to navigate through such a tumultuous period in life.

Today, I am a proud and happy student, thriving in my academic pursuits.

Lucy’s story is a powerful reminder of how JMERC’s Girls and Youth Empowerment Programme not only provides education but also instils the confidence and strength needed to overcome life’s challenges. Her journey is an inspiring testament to the transformative power of empowerment, education, and unwavering resilience.
