Gender Transformative Education Initiative (GTEI)

Gender Transformative Education Initiative (GTEI)

The Problem

In Uganda, gender inequality remains a significant barrier to educational attainment and personal development, particularly for girls. Despite progress in enrollment rates, girls often face systemic challenges such as early marriage, limited access to educational resources, gender-based violence, and harmful cultural norms. These obstacles not only limit their educational opportunities but also their ability to lead and contribute to their communities. The result is a cycle of inequality, where many girls never reach their full potential, perpetuating poverty and social exclusion.

The Challenges Rural Ugandan girls face:

  1. Limited access to quality education
  2. Cultural and societal expectations prioritizing domestic roles
  3. Lack of sanitation facilities and menstrual hygiene resources
  4. High dropout rates due to poverty and early marriages

The Solution:

The Gender Transformative Education Initiative (GTEI) aims to address these challenges by promoting gender equality and empowering girls through education. GTEI is implemented in partnership with Makerere University, STiR Education, and with support from the Ministry of Education and Sports. By shifting mindsets and dismantling harmful stereotypes, the program works to create safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments. We focus on:

  1. Educating both boys and girls on gender equality, respect, and inclusion
  2. Training teachers to adopt gender-responsive pedagogies that encourage equal participation and reduce gender bias
  3. Engaging parents, communities, school leaders, and media in raising awareness on gender equality, girls’ education, and breaking down stereotypes. This includes a media-based engagement with NTV Uganda.
  4. Policy engagement to influence national education policies that support gender equality and ensure that girls’ education is prioritized, advocating for systemic change at all levels of government and across education sectors.

Through targeted interventions, GTEI challenges gender norms and empowers girls to realize their full potential, ensuring they have equal opportunities to succeed academically and in life.

Our Goal

Our goal is to reach 1,000 schools across Uganda, impacting over 2 million girls and boys by 2027. Through the Gender Transformative Education Initiative (GTEI), we aim to foster a generation of young people who are committed to gender equality and equipped with the skills and mindset to challenge stereotypes. By engaging over 1 million parents and community members through media-based initiatives, we will create a nationwide movement that prioritizes girls’ education and empowers communities to drive lasting change.
