Empowering Girls Through Education

Gender disparities in education continue to widen in Africa and over 15 million girls in Sub-Saharan Africa between the ages of 6-18 are out of school. Barriers to girls education continue to widen and they include gender-blind school systems and structures, inhibitive gender norms and practices, and a lack of agency for girls to navigate the ever-increasing challenges.

JM Education and Research Centre (JMERC) exists to provide school-aged girls in Uganda with opportunities to access equality and quality education. By empowering them through education, these girls will gain the knowledge and confidence to grow into women who will positively contribute to their families, communities, nations, and the world. JMERC partners with secondary schools in rural communities in Uganda, focusing on nurturing girls agency and empowering them to be the people they can be. We do this through developing enabling school ecosystems, teacher professional development support with a special focus on gender-responsive methodologies and direct training and mentorship for girls on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), leadership and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH)

Some of the girls we support are young mothers and or survivors of gender-based violence. We recognize the challenges these girls face and work to help them overcome their difficult past life experiences and traumas, and prepare them to face the future with positivity and confidence. We encourage the girls to define their dreams and support them in envisioning a future in which they can be protagonists of their lives, taking leadership in family, community, national, and global affairs.
